German cinemas use specific abbreviations to indicate how a film will be shown. Here is what each one means.
OV stands for Originalversion. The film plays in its original language without dubbing, normally without subtitles. OV does not mean English: the spoken language depends on the film. Check the cinema’s description of the selected screening.
OmU stands for Original mit Untertiteln: original audio with subtitles. In German cinema programmes, these are usually German subtitles. A cinema or festival may specify a different subtitle language, so the individual screening’s description takes precedence.
OmeU stands for Original mit englischen Untertiteln: original audio with English subtitles. The spoken language may be French, German, Japanese or another language. English subtitles do not establish that the audio is English.

Some cinemas also use OF (Originalfassung), OmfU (Original mit fremdsprachigen Untertiteln), or OmdU (Original mit deutschen Untertiteln). These are less common variants of the formats above.

Original-language films can offer listening practice. When the audio is English, OmU with German subtitles lets you compare spoken English with written German. Check the listed audio and subtitles: OmU alone does not identify the spoken language.
